Bralette or underwire: how to choose
29 September 2026 · 4 min read
Neither style is better. They do different jobs, and most people are happiest with both in their drawer. Here is a plain way to decide which one to reach for.
What an underwired bra does well
- Gives shape and separation, because the wire holds the cup in a set position.
- Often provides more lift and support, which many people prefer on long or active days.
- Comes in band and cup sizes, so it can be fitted more precisely.
What a bralette does well
- Feels light and flexible, with no wire and often no padding.
- Works well for relaxing at home, sleeping in, or under looser clothing.
- Usually comes in letter sizes such as S, M and L, which makes ordering simpler.
Things to watch for
- Because bralettes use letter sizes, check the measurements the brand gives instead of relying on the letter alone.
- A wide, firm band on a bralette gives more support than a thin elastic one. If support matters, look at the band.
- An underwire that does not suit your shape can be uncomfortable. If the wire digs in, the size or the style may be wrong, not you.
A simple way to choose
- Think about your day. Long, active or dressed-up days often suit an underwire. Quiet days and sleep often suit a bralette.
- Think about your clothes. Fitted tops usually show the shape of an underwire best. Loose knitwear is easy with a bralette.
- Think about comfort first. If a style bothers you by lunchtime, wear the other one.
Whatever you choose, use the same rule: the band should be snug, and the cups should fit without gaping or spilling. Our size guide can give you a starting size.
